Music Performance - Strings

Music Performance - Strings

Students in the string area benefit from the extensive teaching and performance experience of our faculty and receive the individualized attention they need to succeed in the professional world of music. Many graduates excel as members of full-time professional orchestras worldwide.

String majors attend weekly studio classes featuring a combination of solo, chamber music, and orchestral repertoire in preparation for careers in these areas. In addition, students take weekly private lessons from faculty members and attend master classes presented by guest artists.

All string studio classes are open to all string majors, and students are encouraged to attend classes that focus on string instruments other than their own. Performance opportunities in the string area abound and include MSU orchestras (one symphony and one concert orchestra), chamber music ensembles, and regional professional orchestras. Students can also participate in an annual honors competition; the winners perform with the MSU Symphony Orchestra on the stage of the Great Hall in the Wharton Center for Performing Arts.

Uncommon Pursuits.

A very high percentage of string graduates win positions with orchestras throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Graduates earning Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees have been placed in tenure-track teaching positions at colleges and universities across the globe.
