The woodwind area recruits the highest caliber of musicians and creates an atmosphere of innovation where students receive individualized attention to ensure they are well prepared for their future careers.
The faculty is performance oriented and includes a full-time faculty member for each woodwind instrument. Faculty members have extensive performance backgrounds as soloists and maintain active performance schedules with national and international orchestras, including those in Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Minnesota and Toronto.
Courses are conducted primarily through private lessons. Each studio has its own studio class consisting of a performance forum with discussion on various topics ranging from style and periods of music to reed making.
Students can double major and every effort is made for students to design their own curriculum. In addition, they have diverse opportunities for chamber music and solo performance. They may also participate in MSU’s symphony and concert orchestras and wind, symphony and concert bands.
