What is a French education major?

French education is designed for students who want to teach French in grades 7–12 and explore other education-related career paths. If you’re interested in joining an immersive language learning community, studying in France and growing as both a person and an educator, this major could be a strong fit.

What you'll learn

You’ll work toward advanced proficiency in French while exploring cultures and perspectives across the Francophone world. Along the way, you’ll build the skills to teach effectively in today’s multilingual classrooms through immersive language study and hands-on teaching experiences.

Why study French education at MSU?

This French teaching degree brings together language learning, cultural exploration and hands-on training to help you become a confident, engaging teacher. With an emphasis on interdisciplinary learning, cross-cultural experiences and immersion, you’ll practice making meaningful connections — and sharing them in ways that resonate with your future students.

Hands-on learning opportunities

As a French education major, you can start building experience right away through options like study abroad, tutoring in local schools and hands-on teacher education course work that helps you grow your classroom skills early.

Student organizations and activities

Outside the classroom, you can connect with other students through opportunities like:

  • French club;
  • French film festivals;
  • conversation hours and chances to connect with French-speaking international students.

These groups offer chances to learn, lead, find your people and have fun. And with more than 1,000 student clubs at MSU, these are just the beginning.

Alumni pursuits

Alumni may work in public and private schools across the U.S., as well as in organizations around the world. Careers in foreign language teaching, including French, are projected to have above-average job growth, and bilingual and world language programs remain in demand.
