MSU’s turfgrass management program is rich in history, tradition and achievement. For more than seven decades, this globally recognized program has provided a world-class education and a strong network of support for students.
You’ll have unique opportunities to study turfgrass on golf courses, athletic fields and home lawns while learning about construction, establishment and management. MSU students and faculty use research to develop and care for high-quality playing surfaces used in major sporting events around the world.
The program is directed by John “Trey” Rogers III, also known as “The Grass Guru.” MSU and Rogers were important leaders in the installation of natural grass playing surfaces in the Pontiac Silverdome for the 1994 World Cup.
Specialized concentrations
You can focus your studies on:
- golf course management;
- sports turf management, with a focus on all forms of outdoor sporting surfaces;
- landscape and lawn care specialties.
Hands-on learning opportunities
In this major, students support faculty research and MSU Extension efforts, including field days hosted at the Hancock Turfgrass Research Center. You’ll also gain hands-on work experience and build your professional network by completing an internship during the program.
Two generations of MSU students and faculty have contributed to turfgrass management at FIFA World Cup games in North America.
MSU’s turfgrass program has a long history of contributing to major sports moments. Two generations of MSU students and faculty have supported turfgrass management at FIFA World Cup games in North America, and MSU partnered with the University of Tennessee, whose turf management program is directed by MSU alum John Sorochan, to support playing surface installation efforts for the 2026 World Cup in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
