We know the out-of-state cost to attend MSU may be high and we are investing heavily to increase affordability and accessibility for non-resident students. The following scholarships are awarded to incoming domestic out-of-state first-year students for qualifying educational expenses, pending available funding, and are contingent upon students maintaining out-of-state residency status. In most instances, no additional applications are required.

See the out-of-state scholarship regulations for additional details about these awards.

MSU Non-resident Scholarship

The MSU Non-resident Scholarship has four award levels granted based on academic achievement and excellence beyond the classroom. All domestic out-of-state students admitted to MSU are automatically considered for this award. Students with a GPA of 3.4 or higher on a 4.0 scale are guaranteed a minimum of $7,000.

Award levels

President's Scholarship: $15,000
Provost's Scholarship: $12,000
Dean's Scholarship: $10,000
1855 Scholarship: $7,000

Additional out-of-state scholarships

Red Cedar Scholarship

Awarded to dependents or grandchildren of MSU alumni; $1,250 annually for eight semesters.

Presidential Study Abroad Scholarship

Awarded for use with an MSU-sponsored or co-sponsored study abroad program; $3,000 or $5,000 depending upon the length of the program. Award must be used with the first eight semesters of enrollment as an undergraduate at MSU or before completion of the undergraduate degree, whichever occurs first.

See the out-of-state scholarship regulations for further details regarding these awards.

If you were admitted for a term prior to 2024, please refer to our previous out-of-state scholarship regulations.
