Accounting

Interested in an accounting major?

This field is for students interested in jobs for accounting majors, such as public, managerial or governmental accounting. Public accountants are involved in auditing, planning and providing specialized advice on business problems. Managerial accountants are responsible for generating the information needed to plan and control a company's operations. Governmental accountants review financial documentation, such as audits of tax accounts, for the government and its taxpayers.

The MSU undergraduate program in accounting is in the top 25 nationally, as ranked by U.S. News & World Report. The accounting major program is Michigan's largest educator of certified public accountants and is endorsed by the Institute of Management Accountants. The Broad College of Business is also included among an elite group of target recruiting schools for each of the “Big Four” public accounting firms, as well as for other national and regional firms.

College of Business Admission Process
First-year business applicants are first reviewed by the Office of Admissions for admissibility to the university. Then they are reviewed by the Broad College of Business for direct admission to the College of Business. During this time, the student's major will appear as business preference in their account (no additional action is required).

The Broad College of Business has a competitive admission program with limited space for direct admission. There are two pathways for admission:

  1. Direct admission from high school
  2. Secondary admission for current MSU students
